Understanding 1 Corinthians 13: The Essence of Christian Love

You are used to reading the bible. You read a text and pause, thinking about how it relates to yourself.

Or, maybe, you love reading anything about human life, attitudes, and motivations. You do not shy away from bible texts.

The materials on my site can be beneficial to you.

We experience various kinds of circumstances in our lives. We react with feelings, and we develop attitudes.

It is good to pause and consider one’s own life. Paul’s chapter on Christian love in 1 Corinthians 13 can help us do so.

Instructions in the New Testament point us to a loving God who did much for our good. Jesus even laid down his own life so that we can obtain forgiveness for our sins.

I will be glad if my materials also lead you to trust God.

Overview of 1 Corinthians 13

Part 1: Verses 1-3

Verses 1-3 compare the value of various religious activities to the value of love. Religious activities are of little value if done without love.

I have tried to give some general ideas on the religious activities mentioned. This is not an exhaustive exposition. It is just thoughts and blog posts. Yet I hope it is inspiring.

Part 2: Verses 4-7:

In verses 4-7, Paul describes the love he has in mind.

Mostly, I took one aspect of this description at a time. I wrote about bible verses where the particular Greek or English word also occurs. Thus, you can find posts on the words “patience”, “selfishness” and “hope”, for example.

Part 3: Verses 8-13

Here, Paul sums up his ideas. He points to the abiding value of love. “Love never fails.” (Verse 8, NIV). “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.” (Verse 13, NIV).

So far, I have written some general texts on this section. I am not yet altogether sure about how to continue.

The History of This Site

I started writing on this site in December 2015. I began to publish once a week.

Most of my followers joined me while I wrote on verses 4 to 7.

Having reached Part 3 of the chapter, I discontinued writing in 2021.

I felt I needed more time for preparation now. Yet, I had less time for blogging than before.

Now I consider resuming the task. I am not sure how often I will publish future posts.

Please feel free to follow me for future blog posts.
