Recently I have been publishing several posts about hope. Before that I have been dealing with faith.

In 1 Corinthians 13:7 we learn that the kind of charity-love Christians are encouraged to pursue annd obtain from God is charaacterised by the statement that it

“believeth all things, hopeth all things…”

Some may well object that you better do not believe a traitor. I fully agree with that.

Pursuing foolish hopes may invariably lead you into disappointment. Actually I find it is wise to examine what you reasonably can hope for.

But what does Paul mean with “all things”? In fact the word “things” is not found in the Greek original text. It is just a means to make the English translation more smooth.

I guess that Paul meant to say that charitable love believes and hopes for all things that are offered to us through Jesus Christ. Morover the Greek word can also refer to time, meaning always or daily. Thus Paul says that charitable love keeps on bleiving and hoping for any divine blessing that is made available to us through the atoning work of Jesus Christ.

“…believeth all things, hopeth all things…” – I tend to suggest: Charity-love is full of faith and full of hope. This phrase then would mean that faith and hope are something of a leading principle to the lives of those who experience or possess this kind of love.

Whatever thoughts and attitudes fill your heart will become evident in the ways you behave speak and act. It will serve to form your character.
